If you always wanted to learn how to crochet but you are ensure where to start this blog will give you an idea of what is needed in terms of materials and the basic stitches that are used.
What materials do I need to crochet?
- A crochet hook. Sizes 4-6 mm works best because when you begin to crochet you will most likely crochet tight small stitches. The recommended hooks will allow you to work larger stitches more comfortably.
- A light coloured acrylic yarn . An important part of crocheting is counting. It is difficult to count the stitches if you you are using a dark coloured yarn. I recommend using colours such as white, yellow or light blue. Avoid dark colours such as dark blue and black. Acrylic yarn works better than cotton or cotton blends which tend to slip off the hook.
- Scissors – a small scissors will do just fine.
What do I need to do know to crochet?
Crochet involves knowing the basic or what I often refer to as the foundation crochet stitches. This is a collection of stitches that are used in different ways in all crochet projects. These stitches can also be combined with each other for more advanced crochet stitches. The stitches are : slip knot, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet and triple crochet. I will talk a bit about these stitches and share a video demo of each stitch.
This is a knot that is used at the beginning of some crochet projects. There are two methods that can be used to complete the slip knot one with the crochet hook Slip knot 1 – video demo and one without the crochet hook Slip knot 2 – video demo You can decide which one you are most comfortable with.
The most important thing to remember when you are working the slip knot is that it should “slip” out or come apart easily when you pull on the yarn. If that does not happen, it is not a slip knot.
The Chain stitch is usually made immediately after the slip knot. Chain stitch – video demo It is most often used to make a foundation chain at the beginning of a crochet project. One or more of the other foundation stitches can be worked into this foundation chain.
Single Crochet and Half Double Crochet
Single crochet Single Crochet – video demo and half double crochet Half double crochet – video demo are what I refer to as the shortest of the foundation crochet stitches, they are therefore used on small projects such as small purses or coin purses. They can also be used as borders around a project with rough edges.
Double and Triple Crochet
Double Double Crochet – video demo and triple crochet Triple crochet – video demo are the taller crochet stitches. They are therefore used to make larger crochet projects such as blankets, throws and hats.
Try these out and let me know how they go.
